You can define a resume in various ways. It can be called as an advertisement, an individually designed document, highlight of your experience and for employers it is a filter. There can be no way of making a just perfect resume. What one can do is that he prepares a resume in such a way that includes all his experience, expertise, skills and presents himself to an employer as the best suited candidate for a particular post.
While applying for a job it is very important that you understand how to present yourself in the best way to a recruiter or an employer. It is at this point that your resume plays a decisive role.

You must understand that writing a resume is different for different people and job for which you are applying for. Therefore a resume will look different for freshers and professionals. Here we have provided some tips which are mainly required in a resume. you can use all the tips if they are applicable to you.

If you are a student then you can also consult your college/place of study to get some tips. But remember not to copy a samples as it will cause irritation to an employer seeing same type of a resume. If you are professional then you must be having a fair idea of writing a resume but you need to learn some key points.

  • Keep it simple

  • “If they didn’t hear it, you didn’t say it’.

Before you start to write a resume, do your homework first.

  • You must have knowledge about yourself.

  • Why do you want to apply for a particular job.

  • Your Skill Sets that you have to offer.

  • Detail information about the post and company.

  • Refer various publications, newspapers, internet to know more about the company.


Remember until you don’t know the purpose of writing a resume, you will not be able to write it properly.


What points you need to include while writing a resume.


  • Objective: This is specific statement but a short one that includes position, industry, what you want to do and relevant skills.

  • Personal Details: This includes your name, address, contact information, date of birth etc.

  • Education: Starting from your highest education mention all the education that you have. Write the name of school/college/university, year of passing and your score in each. You can also include any course you have done apart from the basic education. This may include certificate course or internships.

  • Experience: Write about your previous work experience, employer, period and most importantly what you did and achieved in your job.

  • Skills: What are your skills set that makes you stand out from the other candidates applying for the same post. This can include your business, communication, group, leadership skills, proficiency in language etc.


  • Interests: This is very important inclusion though people don’t take it seriously but it can open the gates for you in the company you are applying. A lot can be understood about a person’s personality through his interests.

Once you are done with writing part, self assess it and then handover it to someone else who knows you. He may tell you what you have included in a resume is honest or not or have you missed any other traits/quality of yours.

Evaluate the appearance of resume on the basis of following points.


  • Layout

  • Highlighted Headings

  • Readable Font

  • Style and Length

  • Spacing

  • Consistent placement of information

You can follow any of the various available format. Based on the format the length of the resume may vary. But keep one thing in mind that a resume should not be too overcrowded. It should be catchy and easily readable. Generally two styles are used for writing a resume either chronological, where you include all the relevant details under a heading or skill based where you can present yourself depending upon your skills and the skills that are required for the company/organization.
